Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro - Tanzania (Africa)
At  5893 metres (19,336 feet) Mt Kilimanjaro spans five climate zones

Picking the best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro can be the difference between seeing the summit and merely reaching it. At 5,893 m (19,336 ft), the snow- capped peak in Tanzania is African highest with Eve different climatic zones and a half-dozen walk-able trails to the top, including the popular Marangu. Mountain rainforests lead to scrub and alpine moorland before the ice fields of the summit. Keen to avoid the crowds and downpours? Then climb in September for cloud-free days and peaceful trails.

Mulu Caves - Sarawak, Borneo (Asia)
The longest caves in Asia

Set deep with the rainforest of Sarawak's Gunong Milu National Park, the Mull Caves beg a zillion gushing superlatives. Dozens of Caverns make up the complex cave system, from Wind Caves breeze-filled calcite treasures to the imposing 107 km (66 mile)- long time-stone of Clearwater Cave - the longest cave in Asia. Roaring crystalline rivers feed small, emerald streams while the sheer magnitude of Deer Cave defies description - but is reputed to be large enough to house live St. Paula Cathedrals and over 20 Boeing 747 jumbo jets.

Catwalk Over the Iguazu falls - Brazil-Argentina (South America)
A  succession of tumbling cascades that form a foaming cauldren
Some 275 tumultuous waterfalls tumble over the cliffs at the border of Argentina and Brazil to form a foaming Cauldron below a series of terrifying precipices - a convergence point dubbed the Devil's Throat Gorge. It is said that Argentina provides the show and Brazil enjoys the view of the Iguaza Falls - and is true that the cascades are best viewed from the Brazilian panoramic catwalks. These magnificent vantage points are reached via paths that snake through jungle rich in butterfly and bird life. Visit in spring when the mist and foam cause an almost permanent rainbow adding extra magic to the jaw-dropping views.

White Nights - St. Petersburg, Russia (Europe)
Stroll along the river to revel in the eternal glow of St. Peterburg's white nights
During May to July, when the North Pole is tipped towards the sun, St Petersburg's sun never dips far beneath the horizon - even at night. The glow adds a poetic shimmer to a fairytale Cityscape of glided domes and spires. Although White Nights are not unique to the city, St Petersburg enjoys this eternal twilight in a particularly romantic style. Forget madcap revelry, the common celebration is a stroll along the River Neva, to relish a night sky that is curiously, and beautifully, indistinguishable from day.

Summer Solstic - Oland, Sweden (Europe)
Even the most sensible Swede resorts to a strange, summer silliness

21th June
Even the Swedes themselves will readily admit to a strange, midsummer silliness - a symptom, they say, of being sensible and practical for the rest of the year. Together with Christmas, Midsummer (Midsommar) is the most popular festival in Scandinavia - a traditional celebration that pre- dates Christian times. Once a fertility ritual that centred on nature and the onset of the harvest season, the Summer solstice is time to gather friends and family together for fresh strawberries, smoked fish and pickled herring - washed down with plenty of beer. Many Swedes still decorate their houses inside and out with floral wreaths and bow-strewn birch garlands, while in rural Sweden, maidens dance around ribbon-swathed poles to ancient folk songs. in Oland, a small island on the Baltic Coast, giant bonfires are lit to ward off evil spirits and signify the defeat of darkness. Reached from Kalmar via a 6 km (4 mile) bridge, Oland is synonymous with wild Midsummer partying. In Stockholm, crowds of revealers drink beer and picnic by the capital's many lakes and waterways - in olden times, people would gaze into the depths to see the face of their future spouse. Today, the custom of the young is do simply jump in - naked.
