Ancient temples, shrines and markets characterise olden Yogyakarta |
Often described as Indonesia in Miniature, Yogyakarta sits within the cradle of several Javanese empires surrounded by jungles, rices fields and mountain peaks. To stroll the old quarter of Yogyakarta ( Kota Gede), is to delve into bustling markets filled with fine arts created by local craftsmen and painters. The Sultan's Palace(the Kraton) is a city within a city with opulent rooms lavishly appointed with gilded artwork and richly woven textiles. In the outer of Yogyakarta, the countryside is home to picturesque temples and shrines bordered by the Indian Ocean and a string of volcanoes. Visit in May when rainfall is at lowest and the skies are bright and clear.
