Fourth of July - East River, New York, USA

35,000 fireworks entertain over 3.5 million New Yorkers

Some call it Independence Day, many simply "the fourth of July", or in the words of Founding Father John Adams, America's "great anniversary festival". In honour of the 1776 declaration, communities across America break out in a riot of stars-and-stripes-pomp and ticker-tape pageantry at picnics, barbecues and street parties. For over three decades, Macy's department store has sponsored what it bills as the nation's largest July 4th  firework party: a 30 minute show of 35,000 shells launched from barges on the East River and New York Harbour that draws 3 million people onto the streets. Tune into local station 1010 WINS for rousing classical music in perfect synch with the pyrotechnics. Arrive very early to grab a front-line spot on the river, the South Street Seaport or Brooklyn Heights Promenade.
