Clad in 11 metres (36 ft) of permafrost Hawaii's Mauna Kea has an alpine feel

1st October
Meaning "White Mountain" in Hawaiian, Mauna Kea began forming about one million years ago a and is distinctive for its snow-capped winter peaks and 11 m ( 36 ft ) permafrost. A signed path tortuously stumbles its way up the ultra-steep south side to the Visitor information Station at about 2834 m ( 9297 ft ) before 8 km ( 5 mile ) stretch to the crater's rim. Home to a state-of-the-art observatory, the distant glow of the Kilauea Volcano adds an ethereal ambience to this sacred site for-gazing where eye-popping night views in an alpine setting have an otherworldly feel.
