Theories abound on the mystic origins of Easter Island's Statues |
Located 3,500 km (2,174 miles) off the coast of Chile, Easter island is the world's most remote inhabited island - technically a conjoined trio of extinct volcanoes that rise over 3,500 in (10,00 ft) from the ocean floor. Fodder for widespread speculatiion. the cultural development of Easter Island is shrouded myth in relation to its giant statues dating back to AD700 - some of which are over 1.2 m (4 ft) tall and weigh around 14 tons. Theories as to how the rock- hewn figures were carved then hauled and erected range from ship-wrecked elephants to Atlantis and arrivals from another world. Conjecture continues regarding mystic energy fields, alien influence and spiritual dynamics - one of the planet's last great puzzles.
