The Northern Lights, Svalbard, Norway |
Only the very hardy visit Svalbard (meaning cold edge) during wintertime. Yet this archipelago between the northern tip of Norway and the North Pole boasts a certain charm in the depths of winter even though the sun never gets off the ground. Arrive in a swaddle of thermal clothes to survive average temperatures of -20°C (-4°F) and keep your wits about you as the town is on constant high-alert for polar bear incursions. A more welcomed visitor is the green, red, blue, violet and yellow sparkle of the Northern Lights (the Aurora Borealis), a dazzling VIP guest to this snow-covered expanse enveloped by darkness: no twilight, no dusk, just the glow of the moon and the smallest twinkle of the stars.
